Flu shots available throughout Cayman

| 31/10/2018

Cayman News Service(CNS Local Life): This year’s flu shot has arrived and the free vaccines will be available on all three islands. Director of Primary Health Care Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez said in a press release that the vaccine for seasonal flu is being dispensed at the Cayman Islands Hospital and district health centres in Grand Cayman, Faith Hospital on Cayman Brac and the Little Cayman Clinic.

The flu vaccine is free to all residents. While appointments aren’t necessary, those getting the shot need to inform the clinic registration officer.

“We recommend that people get vaccinated as soon as possible and definitely before the peak of the flu season which ranges between December and January,” Dr Williams- Rodriguez said in the Health Services Authority press release.

The doctor added that the vaccine is only effective for one season. Everyone from the age of six months should get the flu vaccine.

It is especially important for people at high risk for complications from influenza and those who live with or care for them, be vaccinated early each year. High-risk people include:

  • Children six months to four years of age, but especially those under two years.
  • Pregnant women
  • People aged 50 or older
  • People of any age with weakened immune systems and those with chronic medical conditions such as heart, kidney and lung diseases, diabetes and obesity
  • People living in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

The locations and times to receive the injections are:

  • General Practice Clinic at the Cayman Islands Hospital, and all district health centres, from 2pm-4pm Monday through Friday, available now
  • Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac from 2pm–4pm, available now
  • Cayman Islands Hospital atrium from 10am–noon, from 2-16 November
  • Little Cayman Clinic: residents of Little Cayman should contact the clinic (948-0072 or 948-0114) to make arrangements.

“To minimise workplace disruption and ensure that as many persons as possible get vaccinated, I am also pleased to announce that our Public Health Department will continue our programme of the onsite workplace vaccination initiative for companies with 20 or more employees wishing to have the vaccine,” Dr Williams-Rodriguez said.

Companies interested in the programme should contact the Public Health Department at 244-2621 or 244- 2889, or by email to register.
