(CNS Local Life): The sixth annual Geology Education Week, set for Monday, 15 October, to Friday, 19 October, will again feature geology lessons for students at local high schools and a professional development course for local educators that includes a field trip to Cayman Brac. Organised every year by the Water Authority–Cayman, also returning is Dr Brian Jones, professor of geology at the University of Alberta, Canada, to lead the week-long series of events.

Hendrik-Jan van Genderen, the authority’s water resources engineer, explained in a press release that Dr Jones brings a wealth of knowledge and local experience to the programme.

“Not only is Dr Jones a world-renowned geologist, his career includes more than 30 years of work right here in the Cayman Islands,” van Genderen said. “We are very pleased to announce that Dr Jones will be able to lead this year’s programme of events and the level of interest from local schools and educators is greater than ever before.”

Although registration for the courses offered as part of Geology Education Week is restricted to local high school students and educators, the public will also have the opportunity to engage with the subject matter through the authority’s social media accounts.

Water Authority corporate communications officer Hannah Reid added that since 2016 the authority has included a public element to the programme. “This is our way of sharing Dr Jones’ wealth of knowledge with the wider public and engaging with our followers on social media,” she said.

The social media campaign will run over the course of Geology Week and culminate with a giveaway on Facebook and Instagram on Friday, 19 October. “If you’re not already following the Authority on social media, now is the time,” Reid said.
