Proper dress for teachers

Can the public be made aware of the dress code policy for government teachers?

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian statusAuntie’s answer: I reached out to the Department of Education Services (DES) and very quickly received a response to your question. While there isn’t a written policy on dress, the DES has published guidelines which are included below.

A DES statement on the question said the department “has high expectations for our students’ dress and would expect that our employees dress appropriately for their work assignment”.

Generally speaking, business casual, which doesn’t include denim jeans, is the “minimum standard of acceptable dress for professional educators”.

In addition, the DES said that principals and school leaders should ensure staff dress in an “appropriate and professional manner at all times”.

Drivers need to turn off their high beams

What are the laws regarding the use of high beam lights in vehicles? I’m constantly blinded by at least 35% of vehicles driving around with high beam lights for no real reason. Maybe you can ask RCIPS as well if this is not enforceable or should I just have a spotlight to beam back into […]

Recycling options limited on Sister Islands

We enjoy recycling opportunities including aluminium, plastic, glass, cardboard and paper, tyres, batteries and others. It is my understanding that the Sister Islands do not have collection and recycling for glass, plastic, cardboard or paper. Can you confirm whether this is true and, if so, find out why not? They may be small, but both islands appear […]

Buses should not stop in roundabouts

What are the rules in regard to where school buses can stop? I have seen a school bus stop on the roundabout by Hurley’s (on the inside lane) to allow children to disembark. It appears incredibly dangerous to me to expect all traffic entering the roundabout to stop.

This looks like a great question from some busybody with nothing else to do.

We should all just hunker down in our desks and develop a hunchback without questioning anything.

I don’t think so and I wasn’t the poster. I would like my children to look up to the teachers and respect them. I would like that my children think the clothing they wear is appropriate for a work environment. I don’t want my children to think borderline sexy/slutty or sloppy dressed teachers are appropriately dressed. I don’t want my children to be confused that I tell them it’s wrong but society and the schools allow it and or don’t care. The kids already have barriers to get jobs. They are Caymanian and not expat white. Enforce good role models starting with the teachers attire.
