Minister for Health Dwayne Seymour talks to some of the fair’s participants.

(CNS Local Life): The 2018 Stood Up Interscholastic Fair, organised by the Family Resource Centre (FRC), doubled the number of participants in its second year, with 85 students, representing 13 government and private schools, displaying 40 anti-bullying-themed projects. The fair aimed to encourage the students to be creative in exploring ways they could address bullying.

Held at the ARC in Camana Bay on Saturday, 6 October, the event also attracted larger-than-anticipated visitor numbers.

Along with viewing the students’ projects, visitors obtained anti-bullying literature and relevant information from the fair’s partner agency booths, stated a press release.

Minister of Health Dwayne Seymour also attended the fair,  visiting several booths and speaking with students.

Competition entries were evaluated by judges from the Ministry of Education, Department of Counselling Services, United Against Bullying Foundation, and the campaign’s main private sector sponsor, Hurley’s Media.

The winners, in the two age categories, were:

  • 13-15 years old – Georgette Ansil, Clifton Hunter High School (first place); Natalie Bolland and Charlize Keens, Cayman International School (second); and Kendra Dickson and Tahiti Seymour, Cayman International School (third).
  • 10-12 years old – Zariyah Duran and Keira Oliver, Savannah Primary School (first); Nathaniel Lopez,  George Town Primary School (second); and Johann Uy and Cohen Ting,  St Ignatius Primary School (third).

The first-place winners in each category received $500 with second and third receiving $250 and $150, respectively.

“We’re delighted that the Family Resource Centre’s hard work paid off in organising the Interscholastic Fair,” said Seymour in the press release. “It’s clear from the attendance numbers and the high standard of the entries that the vast majority of schools are using Stood Up’s zero tolerance to bullying to reinforce their own anti-bullying policies.

“Talking to the students, they obviously learned a lot from making these submissions while taking on board the campaign’s central message.”
