(CNS Local Life): One of the signature competitions held during the Pirates Week Festival has been rebranded to reflect an emphasis on heritage. The newly named District Heritage Ambassador Costume Competition, which is replacing Miss Festival Queen, is aimed at men and women aged 15 and older with the idea of showcasing Caymanian culture through design.

The event is a competition among the district committees, with each electing an ambassador as its representative and designing a national costume, stated a press release. The ambassadors are Sheila Cortina (West Bay), Jessica Ebanks (North Side), Dea Ramoon (East End), Roseanne Myles (George Town) and Daryl Newell (Bodden Town).

This year’s Pirates Week Festival theme is “Celebrating the Seas”, with the sub-theme “Pirates against Plastic”. The costumes will be judged on their design as it relates to these themes, the press release said, with other areas of adjudication comprising authenticity, stage presentation, use of Caymanian products and design detail. The Ministry of Culture is sponsoring the competition.

The competition is set for Saturday, 10 November at 5:30pm on the main stage on Harbour Drive. The winner will be crowned by Miss Festival Queen 2017 Tracey Barnes- Fagan. The ambassador will receive $500 and lead the Illumination parade, showing off the district’s winning costume to an expected crowd of more than 12,000 people.
