(CNS Local Life): The grand prize winner of the Rotary Central Music Extravaganza raffle was awakened by a call at 11:45pm Saturday, 24 November, from the club’s president, William Inniss, informing her she had not only won the $40,000 grand prize but also another $4,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Holly Schneider was the dual winner of this year’s raffle, with the funds raised through the ticket sales supporting more than 50 of the Rotary Central’s “Inspiration Projects”, said a press release from the service organisation.

Among the initiatives being funded by the 23rd annual Music Extravaganza, which was held at Royal Palms Beach Club, are polio education, the more than 80 bus shelters throughout the Cayman Islands, the annual Science Fair, Junior Achievement, health screening, Little Free Libraries, Crisis Centre Assurance, special needs programmes, Take-A-Kid Fishing, vocational grants, Mobi-Mat beach access, parks and recreational projects, and the Fred Spiers Debates Programme.

Those attending the extravaganza were entertained throughout the evening by three local bands, Altered Minds, Fyah Squad and Dr Bob’s Experiment, which offered a variety of genres from rhythm and blues to reggae to country and western, the press release said.

Then at around 11:40pm Inniss invited volunteers to roll the drum containing all the raffle tickets for the draw, leading to the wake-up call to grand-prize winner Schneider.

Rotary Central Cayman Islands initiated the first Music Extravaganza fundraiser in the fall of 1996, with part of proceeds from that event helping to start the first hurricane disaster fund set up by a community service club in Cayman. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 the Rotary Central Hurricane Disaster Fund evolved into the Joint Hurricane Disaster Fund, incorporating other Rotary Clubs of the Cayman Islands.
