Brandy Barnes (blue) in match vs Joanne Williams

(CNS Local Life): Cayman Islands amateur boxer Brandy Barnes took the gold at the recent Caribbean Championships in Guyana, successfully defending her title from last year’s competition, which was held in St Lucia. On Sunday, 9 December, she defeated Joanne Williams of Guyana in front of that boxer’s home crowd in Georgetown in a dominating performance.

Barnes fought Williams to a stoppage in the second round to take the gold medal and title as the 48kg Elite Women’s Champion.

Despite her win, Barnes was critical of her performance in the ring, said a Cayman Islands Boxing Association (CIBA) press release. However, CIBA said it was very proud of the progress demonstrated by her performance over the last 12 months.

“Brandy continues to grow as an athlete; she has more stamina and strength than a year ago and she continues to build her skill demonstrating faster hand speed and a more effective defence,” CIBA said in the press release.

“Brandy has had a great year and 2019 will be a huge year for her as she will be working towards qualification for the Pan American Games in April.”

How many fights did she have to win the gold medal? Was it that only one?

Cayman should recruit some of the women I used to play football with thru the adult CIFA league to the boxing sport. Lots of aggression.
