(CNS Local Life): Cayman resident Adam Stoner will be getting a special haircut this Christmas. He will be donating his very long hair to Locks of Love for it to be used to make wigs for children who have lost theirs due to cancer treatment. At the same time, he is fundraising for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society in memory of his grandfather, who passed away from leukaemia in 2007.

Stoner (21) talked about the personal significance of his efforts. “I have a fundraising goal of $1,926 because that is the year my grandfather was born and this seemed like a great way to honour him,” he said. “And growing my hair to allow me to donate it to Locks of Love is pretty much a no-brainer; it is such an easy thing to do that will mean a lot to the children who get a wig.”

This is not the first time he has had his locks shorn for charity, previously getting his head shaved to raise money for the St Baldrick’s Foundation, which uses the funds to support paediatric cancer research.

His hair will be braided and cut 28 December, with Focus hair salon donating their services. A bonus, he said, is that his whole family, who is spending Christmas in Cayman, will be here to share the moment.

Jennifer Weber, operations manager at the Cancer Society, spoke of the importance of fundraising for the work they do.

“All of the Cancer Society funding comes from donations and fundraising, so we are very grateful to the whole Cayman community for this support,” she said. “No matter how much or how little we receive, it all makes a big difference. For example, 25 cents buys the postage stamp we need to send a family a condolence card. That makes a difference.”

In particular, the efforts of people like Stoner can be a great help, Weber added. “Adam is taking on this fundraising challenge in memory of his grandfather and it will honour that memory by helping others. We are able to provide financial aid to cancer patients because of donations like this.”

This Christmas donation is not a one-off exercise, Stoner emphasised. “As soon as my hair is cut, I plan on letting it grow again. And, definitely, I look forward to doing this again and again.”
