Volunteers who freshened up the NCVO foster home

(CNS Local Life): More than 60 staff of law firm Mourant swapped office chairs for charity work during its annual Away Day. Teams assisted Literacy is for Everyone (LIFE), the National Trust for the Cayman Islands and the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), with a group of volunteers also tackling clean-ups at Smith Cove and Governor’s Beach.

The LIFE volunteers read to students at the Edna Moyle and Bodden Town primary schools as well as cleaning and preparing more than 350 books which will be donated either to school libraries or directly into classrooms so that children can have access to books on a daily basis, a press release said.

The group at the NCVO sanded and repainted the front door, sanded the bannister in preparation for painting and created eight inspirational paintings for the residents. The National Trust volunteers split into two groups, with a smaller team heading to their storage facility to help clean and organise the space and the other one giving the Kids Clubhouse a fresh coat of paint.

LIFE executive director Marilyn Conolly said the organisation “is pleased to work with corporate partners like Mourant to promote literacy and community service in our schools. Giving time and sweat equity is important to connect people with our mission of improving literacy levels in our community.

“The eastern districts are often overlooked in community service activities as it is difficult to get volunteers to travel to these schools. LIFE encourages community service where it supports student learning and doesn’t disrupt teaching time as these students love to have visitors share the joy of reading a good story.”

Hayden Isbister, Mourant’s Cayman Islands managing partner, said of the Away Day initiative, “We are committed to making a difference in Cayman. We really look forward to this day each year, it is a great opportunity for us to work together and give something back to our local community.”
