(CNS Local Life): The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is opening two exhibitions simultaneously on Monday, 10 December, celebrating both the work of Cayman’s first freelance photographer as well as the talent of local art educators. “Ella Latter: The Photographer is Present” showcases her work from the 1930’s-1960’s and “Traces: Activating the Art Curriculum” puts the creations of teachers here on display.

A members’ reception will mark both openings, with “Ella Latter” then running through 24 January and “Traces” until 18 January for the public to view.

The collection of photographs, which come from the Cayman Islands National Archive (CINA), are “designed to tell the life story of this under-represented photographer and promote her collection as a research tool in CINA”, the gallery said in describing the exhibition.

These rarely seen photos include portraits, landscapes, architecture and events, offering “direct insight into Caymanian society in the mid-twentieth century”, the gallery said.

“Traces” highlights new works by Kerry-Ann Brown, Kerwin Ebanks, Sarah McDougall, Claire Musser, Lorna Reid and June South-Robinson, who teach in the art departments of John Gray High School, Clifton Hunter High School and the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre.

The teachers “have come together in dialogue around the National Art Curriculum to illustrate how lesson plans are transformed into inspiring art projects”, the gallery said. The work on display will demonstrate various concepts and techniques introduced to students, with the art media used including, among others, painting, sculpture, photography and video.
