Expired licence for utility company

| 21/01/2019

Is there an update on the new or renewed licence for Cayman Brac Power & Light? According to OfReg’s website, CP&L’s licence expired on 16 December 2018.

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian statusAuntie’s answer: The question came up in the comments 16 January under this article: OfReg gives nod to CUC plan to ease off fossil fuels. The reader is correct that the licence for CBP&L expired 16 December. Here is the link that was referenced on OfReg’s website which confirms that date.

For anyone who doesn’t know, CUC only produces power on Grand Cayman. Cayman Brac Power and Light is the monopoly power provider on both the Brac and Little Cayman.

I reached out to both CBP&L and the Utility Regulation and Competition Office (OfReg) and it seems the wheels are in motion to renew the licence. I wasn’t able to get any details, though.

Jonathan Tibbetts, general manager of CBP&L, simply said, “The new licence is being reviewed prior to being signed.” And the energy and utilities section of OfReg told me, “CBP&L licence negotiations are at an advanced stage and should be concluded shortly.”

I don’t know what “shortly” means but there’s no reason to think that the licence will not be renewed, as it’s the only game on town and has been around for more than 60 years. The company only services a few thousand people, so it’s not a huge money maker.

If you want to know more about CBP&L, you’re out of luck. They have a Facebook page, which offers almost no information other than power outage updates, but no website, unfortunately.

While I realise a hospital’s first priority is to treat patients, and I give high marks to the quality of care at George Town Hospital, I nevertheless feel compelled to complain about what passes as food there. Food supply to Cayman amid US shutdown

Will the US government shutdown affect food supply to the Cayman Islands? I have also heard that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cut back on inspections. Will that compromise the safety of the products that are imported and put out on Cayman’s shelves? Auntie’s answer: I am sure that many people here share […]

CBP&L is family owned. You can’t buy shares. Private family owned businesses can operate how they like, and they do!
