(CNS Local Life): The fourth annual Rum Tails event, in aid of charity One Dog at a Time (ODAAT), is taking place Saturday, 2 February. Among the highlights will be a dog-agility demonstration by Heidi Suarez Rivera, a dog hair salon and a chance for pooches to strut their stuff.

All this takes place from 1pm-4:30pm at Cayman Spirits (65 Bronze Road, George Town).

A dog show will judge entrants in such categories as best toy pooch, best rescue, best trick, best costume and waggiest tail, stated an ODAAT press release. Owners can enter their dogs for one or more categories at $5 each. There will be certificates and rosettes for the top three dogs within each category and a prize for the winner. A professional photographer will also be on hand to take pics of the pooches.

BBQ food, homemade cakes and drinks will be available to purchase and all rum tour proceeds at Cayman Spirits on the afternoon will go to ODAAT. There will also be a variety of pop-up shops selling various items.

ODAAT vice president Caroline Johnston is encouraging all animal lovers to attend. “If you don’t have your own dog to bring, borrow one. Bring a neighbour’s dog, bring a Humane Society dog,” she said, adding, “The dogs will love a day out, they can be pampered at our Doggy Hair Salon and the pups from One Dog at a Time and the Humane Society might find their forever homes, which has happened before at our events.”

All funds raised will help ODAAT rescue and rehome dogs from the streets and from the Department of Agriculture pound.

Paula Blane, ODAAT president, noted in the press release that last year ODAAT rescued 270 dogs and are dependent on community support and sponsors. “This year, we are continuing to raise funds for premises to house even more rescued dogs, before they are adopted,” she said. “I urge the public to give us a call or FaceBook us if they find a stray. If they are taken to the pound, which happened to many over the Christmas break, the dogs will be euthanised if not claimed.”

Organisers added that parking is limited as the event will be located in the rear car park, but people can use the side roads and walk in.

Entry forms for the show will be available at the event or at various locations around Grand Cayman.
