(CNS Local Life): Dog-rescue charity One Dog at a Time (ODAAT) has organised a car boot sale for Saturday, 19 January from 7am-10am as a fundraiser for the non-profit. The event is being held at Kensington House on Dr Roy’s Drive in George Town in the solar-panel-covered car park.

Caroline Johnston, ODAAT vice president, explained the importance of fundraisers like this to the non-profit, with all proceeds going to help rescue and provide medical care for dogs and pups from the pound as well as assisting with vetting and re-homing surrendered and found dogs.

“As a group, we are always seeking ways in which to raise money and assist within the community, too,” she said. “An event such as the car boot sale allows everyone to join in the fun, sell some of their unwanted goods and perhaps pick up some bargains, too.

“At the end of the day, we want – and we need – to rescue as many dogs on death row at the pound as possible. With our increasing rescue numbers, we have to keep raising money to help with the care of these defenceless babies.”

The cost to take part is $25 per car. To register as a seller, email ebrosnihan@kensington.ky or call 925-7012.

Each of ODAAT’s volunteers devote any spare time they have to rescuing puppies and dogs, not only from the pound, but also those which are abandoned and surrendered, the charity said.

“The group prides itself on being able to match a family’s needs and wants with the array of amazing dogs they rescue. Each dog or puppy spends time in a home with one of their many foster families before they go for meet and greets or sleepovers,” ODAAT said.

This time together allows the dogs to experience a safe and loving environment, as well enabling the foster “parents” to ascertain what the dogs want and need. Sleepovers generally last a week and the potential owners are given everything they need, with assistance on hand if required from the ODAAT team.

At any stage, the dog can be returned, though in in 99% of the cases, the pooch settles in to his or her forever home and is adopted, ODAAT said.

Adult dogs can be adopted from ODAAT with a minimum donation of $100 with puppies and small dogs requiring a minimum donation of $200. Additional donations are always welcomed, the charity said, as in a month, veterinary care amounts to thousands of dollars to cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, deworming, heartworm treatment and any other medical care the rescued dogs require.
