DEH Christmas tree mulching machine

(CNS Local Life): There is still time for Cayman Islands residents to take part in the Christmas tree recycling programme organised every year by the Department of Environmental Health (DEH). The programme aims to reduce the amount of waste entering the George Town landfill by recycling natural Christmas trees into mulch.

Special collection bins for the trees will be available through 18 January. Residents are asked to remove all wires and ornaments from the trees before they are placed in the bins, the DEH said in a press release.

The bins are located in the following places:

  • Ed Bush Stadium, West Bay
  • George Town Cricket Field
  • George Town Landfill public drop-off area
  • Spots Dock, Savannah
  • The entrance of Frank Sound Rd

Christmas trees will then be removed and shredded. Free mulch will be made available to the public at the George Town Cricket Field on Saturday, 19 January starting at about 8am. Mulch will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Residents are also advised to come out early and bring shovels and bags for the removal of the mulch.

For more information, call 949-6696 or email DEH.

So far there have been no bins for trees at Frank Sound, nor at the Spots Dock. We had to take ours all the way from North Side to the GT Cricket Field.
