(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Brac District Committee of the National Trust hosted a garden party fundraiser Saturday, 26 January, with proceeds to benefit its habitat protection fund, which aims to preserve environmentally important areas of the island. The venue for the evening, themed the Octopus’ Garden Party, was Trust House on the north side of the island.

In keeping with the theme, the decorations overhead and along the tabletops were sea creatures to give the illusion of a celebration under the sea. As guests walked in, the deejay for the evening, Mark Knowlton started the music, the silent auction and food service began, stated a press release. Guests dined, danced and perused the auction items to a tropical beat.

Committee chairman Chris Randall welcomed the crowd and explained the mission for the evening.

Dhalchand Seeram chaired the Split the Cash raffle and announced the winner’s name before moving the agenda into the next stage of fundraising. Knowlton then switched to auctioneer because the resident professional was unable to attend, the release stated. The items auctioned included a fishing rod, kayak, necklace, perfume, pest control services, champagne and a two-day getaway in Little Cayman.

After the live auction, the music played on while final bids were made on the silent auction’s items.

“Cayman Brac’s District Committee prides itself in producing such events with a minimal impact on our environment,” the release said, so did not use plastic utensils, cups or tableware. The glassware, dishes and metal cutlery were washed the “old-fashioned way” with table scraps fed to the soldier crabs. The result was that only one large bag of trash was produced by the approximately 100 people who attended the event.

The committee thanked everyone who contributed to the fundraiser either through donations to the auctions, helping to prepare and serve the food, setting up and closing down, attending the party, or buying tickets for the event or the raffle.

“All these made the workload light and filled the coffers allowing this dedicated group to continue our environmental mission,” the committee said in the press release.
