(CNS Local Life): The seventh annual Red Sky at Night multi-cultural arts fair is taking place this Saturday, 2 March. Presented by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF) on the grounds of the F.J. Harquail Cultural Centre, the fair, an anchor event for the Cayman Islands National Festival of the Arts (Cayfest), will run from 4pm to midnight.

“For over 20 years, Cayfest has served as a physical representation and reflection of Cayman’s unique history and heritage, our diverse people and all of the colours and creativity in our culture and community,” said Henry Muttoo, CNCF artistic director, in a press release. “Red Sky at Night supports the mission that CNCF undertook over 30 years ago, which is to signify Cayman’s heritage and culture, and to give it form, context and meaning.”

Red Sky emphasises local arts and culture, along with a mix of visual arts, music, theatre, film, fashion design and cultural discussions. The event will feature five sound stages – located both indoors and out – with dance, music, theatre, poetry, drama and more all taking place simultaneously, the press release said.

More than 50 artists and artisans will display their creations of locally made art, crafts, jewellery, clothes and accessories in the various areas including Thatch Walk, Coconut Grove and inside the theatre alcoves. Local vendors in the Café Cayman area will offer dishes such as Cayman-style beef, fish rundown, stewed conch and lobster, and desserts including pepper jelly, coconut treats, heavy cakes, ice cream and doughnuts. In addition, the Creative Kids area will provide supervised activities and specialty food for children ages three to 12.

New to the fair this year is the Caymanian Village, where artists, crafters, storytellers and performers will recreate Cayman’s cultural traditions with live demonstrations of doing “old time tings” such as household chores, playing outdoor games, cooking on a caboose, coconut grating, needlework, thatch plaiting, playing music and boat building. Visitors to this area will also be able to play traditional games like dominoes or warri, enjoy quadrille and maypole dancing, and hear the folk singers perform.

Among the entertainment on offer will be the Swanky Kitchen band; Dreamchasers Dance Company; top local DJ’s Renegade, Super C & Marz; steel pan from Pan N Riddim; and Reggae band CayNRG.

Tickets for Red Sky at Night, which cost $15 for adults, $10 for seniors (65+) and students (ages 13 to 17), and $5 for children 12 and under, can be purchased at all Foster’s Food Fair locations, Funky Tangs, HealthCare Pharmacy Grand Harbour and the CNCF office until Friday, 1 March and online at EventPro. Ticket sales at the gate begin at 3pm on 2 March.
