(CNS Local Life): Preparations for March’s Honouring Women Month (HWM) events have been boosted by a strategic alliance between the Ministry of Community Affairs’ Gender Affairs Unit (GAU) and the Family Resource Centre (FRC), along with a $9,000 contribution by the GAU to help stage various activities.

“The Gender Affairs Unit and the FRC essentially share the same goals in advocating for gender equality and highlighting the role of women in society,” said Senior Policy Analyst (Gender, Diversity and Equality) Karlene Bramwell in a press release.

“We both appreciate the importance of government agencies working collectively towards common objectives, especially those which will impact not only women and their families but the community as well,” she added.

Deputy Chief Officer André Ebanks said of the ministry’s support, “Many of the campaigns and programmes that the Family Resource Centre runs, particularly those for March’s Honouring Women Month, are designed to promote greater equity and social cohesion in the wider community. Therefore, it is entirely natural that we support one another.”

The $9,000 contribution, the largest single donation made to the FRC from an entity, is earmarked to offset the cost of staging activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the observance in the Cayman Islands. Additionally, the GAU will be participating in many of the month’s activities.

Ebanks presented the cheque following a tour Friday, 22 February of the FRC’s temporary offices at Walker House on Mary Street.

Programme facilitator Anne-Marie Diaz, who received the cheque on behalf of the FRC, said, “We are delighted by the ministry’s donation in support of HWM activities. There is increasing evidence that shows that empowering women in communities is a precursor of social and economic growth.”
