Cayman has golden last day at Special Olympics

(CNS Local Life): Cayman’s athletes added five more gold medals to their collection on the final day of competition at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, 20 March. The basketball team beat their Indian counterparts 31-26 in a close gold-medal match that was decided in overtime. On the track, the 800m event proved golden for Matthew Ebanks, Jaheim Ebanks and Beaver Smith who each placed first in their divisions.

The three runners, together with Jordan McLean, also earned silver in the 4x100m relay. Finishing out of the medals in the 800m, Lewin Solomon Jr took fifth place in his division.

Khalid Arana and Nadesha Kelly struck gold in bocce in their division of unified doubles. Bringing home gold medals for the unified basketball team were Shaun Ebanks, Jharran Greenidge, Andrew Smilley, Albis Amaya Garmendia, Rhomar Williams, Jamel Winton and Trevor Powell.

In the pool, Anachell Newman posted another personal best in the 50m backstroke on her way to earning a bronze in that event. Keanu McKenzie, Dayana Powery, Matthew Javier and Alec Cox also took bronze in their 4x50m mixed relay.

The Cayman Islands team has earned a total of 11 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze medals at the Games. The closing ceremony takes place today (Thursday, 21 March). The team returns to Cayman Saturday evening, 23 March.

    I am so proud of all of these athletes who so ably represented Cayman at this high level, with so much success.

    There is a lesson here, about the rewards of hard work and dedication, that all able bodied Caymanian athletes would do well to emulate.
