(CNS Local Life): Prince Charles will be presenting Certificates and Badges of Honour to Felicia McLean and Andrew Smilley, along with an MBE to Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, during an investiture tomorrow (Thursday, 28 March) at Pedro St James. The prince and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will begin their whirlwind visit to Cayman when they touch down at Owen Roberts International Airport later this afternoon.

Governor Martyn Roper, in announcing the awards today to McLean and Smilley, noted it was “particularly special” that the prince would be presenting them.

McLean is being awarded for services to palliative care in the Cayman Islands and Smilley for services to sport.

“I am delighted to announce these awards today for Felicia and Andrew,” Roper said. “They are both very well deserved and demonstrate the major achievements of these dedicated and talented Caymanians. These awards are particularly special as the recipients will receive their medals from HRH The Prince of Wales, during the Investiture at the beautiful Pedro St James tomorrow evening.

“I hope they have a special and memorable evening and that as many as people as possible can witness this historic moment.”

McLean, the director of operations and nursing at Jasmine, started working at the hospice in 2005, when it was known as Cayman HospiceCare. As part of her itinerary, Camilla will be officially opening Jasmine Thursday morning.

McLean has “provided outstanding palliative care to the people of the Cayman Islands for many years and this is reflected in her appointment as director of Jasmine”, said the press release from the Governor’s Office announcing the awards.

Smilley, Cayman’s most-decorated Special Olympics athlete, competes both in the pool and open water, specialising in freestyle. However, he was most recently part of Cayman’s gold-medal-winning basketball team at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi, which concluded last week. In 2009 he was selected in a global online poll to receive the World Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year Award.

Prince Charles and Camilla will depart Cayman 8pm tomorrow, 28 March.

If Franz had even spent two years off this little island earning an MBA in leadership before getting an MBE
for time served it would have been better for him and Cayman. What a mess we are in when neither him or the two Premiers we have had have even lived, studied or worked abroad.
