(CNS Local Life): Rachell Pascal, with a throw of 35.35m, took third in the U17 javelin at the morning session of competition Sunday, 22 April, giving Cayman a second bronze medal at the CARIFTA Games. Her brother, Alex, also excelled in that event, earning a gold in the U20 finals at the 2013 CARIFTA.

That proved to be the high point for Cayman on the day, with several athletes qualifying for the finals in various events but unable to break into the top three spots. While Aijah Lewis came third in her event Saturday, the women’s U20 high jump, there were only three athletes competing, so her bronze medal may not be deemed official.

As on the first day, Jamaica’s team dominated the field, with a total medal count as of Sunday evening of 57, including 19 golds. Bahamas and Trinidad are fighting it out for second and third with medal totals of 16 (nine gold) and 14 (seven gold), respectively.

Michael Smikle gave the home crowd something to cheer about as he qualified for the finals in the men’s U20 800 metres, but he came in seventh, with Jamaica’s Kimar Farquharson earning gold in that event.

Jaden Francis also went through to the finals, in the women’s U17 200m, eventually finishing seventh, with Shaniqua Bascombe of Trinidad pipping Jamaican Brianna Lyston for gold by a scant .17 seconds.

Just missing out in a place in the men’s U17 200m finals were Errol Smith and Neil Brown-McLennon, who were off the qualifying pace by .05 and .17 seconds, respectively.

The field was too strong for Kashief Dawkins and Maliek Copeland as both did not make the cut for the finals in the men’s U20 200m, an event in which Jamaican sprinters took the top two spots, Xavier Nairne earning the gold.

As expected, Jamaican track star Brianna Williams secured the sprint double with her gold-medal run in the women’s U20 200m, after winning the 100m the previous day. Her golden time of 22.89 was .80 seconds ahead of fellow Jamaican Joanne Reid.

The games end today with events including the discus, shot put, triple jump, 4x100m and 4x400m relays, 110m hurdles and the 3000m.
