How do you request a new bus stop?

| 15/04/2019

I pass buses everyday who pull over at the yellow crossing on West Bay Road outside the medical school residence hall. Students stand at the crossing waiting for the bus, which is dangerous as cars don’t know if students are crossing or not and it’s an accident waiting to happen. The buses also block the view of the crossing. Can I suggest a bus stop placed away from the crossing for the students to wait and shelter, too?

Auntie’s answer: Any time a vehicle blocks a view of the road it’s a potentially dangerous situation. One of my pet peeves in this respect is when drivers park alongside a junction, making it impossible for anyone pulling into the road to see oncoming traffic behind those vehicles.

The scenario you describe is a lot scarier to contemplate since it also involves pedestrians. The good news is that there is a mechanism for the public to request a location for a bus stop.

A Public Transport Unit (PTU) official confirmed that all requests for a new public bus stop have to be submitted to the Public Transport Board (PTB) for review. Once a decision is made the applicant will be notified.

Included in the request should be the recommended location, the reason for the bus stop and any other relevant information, such as if the proposed spot is on crown or private land. The official noted, though, that this last piece of information is not required but would speed the review process.

Other helpful, but not required, information would be the contact details of the owner of the private land and if that person supports a bus stop being put on their property.

Requests for a new bus stop should be emailed either to the PTB secretary at Denise.Cummings@gov.ky or the PTU at Cayman.Transport@gov.ky.

Take a picture of offending plate and send to PTU and CC the RCIPS district beat officer. They’ll talk to them. Same with vehicles belching thick black soot. Let’s all work as a community to report these and get them off the road.

How about asking the CIG to create a shoulder for the buses to utilize for the existing bus stops!

I suspect as in England it is against the Law to stop on a crossing, although these crossing don’t appear to follow any other British design. What they had to do over there was place zig zags marking next to all crossings meaning you couldn’t stop within the vicinity of a crossing. I think it was 25 yards either side because even the Brits would stop on a crossing.

Third world rules for third world drivers. Enforcing the laws is seen as culturally insensitive. Drive as if you expect half of the other drivers to do something stupid.

As the buses stop wherever they feel like, the Rotary shelters do not really contribute to creating established bus stops.
Bring on a proper public transport system and get rid of all these amateur drivers.

What about asking the rotary central club? They install bus shelters all over the island

They even install them on roads where there are no regular buses running. Feel sorry for the tourists waiting hours in sweltering ETH shelters for buses that run on West Bay Road.

These idiots stop anywhere. The middle of the new turn lane in to Tropical Gardens is one of their new favorites. Ultimately they will get a passenger killed as a result of their stupidity.

It is a ticket-able offense to sit on or block a pedestrian crossing. Happens on a daily basis. Nothing to see here.
Same as those license plate covers that distort the tag number.
Move along. Nothing to see here.
