(CNS Local Life): The Literacy is for Everyone (LIFE) charity has once again donated books to East End Primary School, this time bringing 2,254 titles, which will enhance classroom libraries throughout all year levels. The donation is part of a joint effort of the charity and the school to provide students with engaging high-quality children’s literature and give them the resources necessary to become independent readers.

Among the books donated were Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Goodnight Moon, Going to the Firehouse, and The Magic School Bus, with selections also featuring well-known characters like Geronimo Stilton, Curious George, Fancy Nancy, Judy Moody and Cam Jansen, stated a press release.

In addition to fiction favourites, the book donation also included non-fiction titles on “interesting and engaging topics” like whales, the Titanic, space and planets, wild weather, frogs and tadpoles, and animal disguises.

Classroom libraries are one element to support instruction in literacy and to help students become independent, life-long readers with a great love for books of all genres, the release said. With access to a wide range of levelled high-quality children’s literature, students have the opportunity to practise and develop the reading skills and strategies taught in lessons with appealing books that are of interest to them.

Marilyn Conolly, executive director for LIFE, said of the donation, “LIFE is committed to supporting the students and teachers in our public-school system as we all work together to give our children the gift of a lifetime: the ability to read.

“Classroom libraries allow children to engage with a wide variety of interesting stories and topics to support their learning. LIFE is pleased to partner with the staff of East End Primary School as we work towards ensuring that every child can read when they leave this primary school.”

LIFE accepts donations and volunteers for their classroom library project, paired reading programme, and other literacy initiatives. Donations of children’s books can be dropped off at Mailboxes Etc. in Camana Bay.
