(CNS Local Life): With the ruling Friday to legalise same-sex marriage in the Cayman Islands, one local establishment is dedicating its recently launched weekly LGBTQIA+ friendly evening to the landmark victory of Chantelle Day and Vicky Bodden. The first of its kind in Cayman, Havana Club hosts the event, now in its third week, every Tuesday night, offering DJ rotations, live dance shows and themed evenings.

“We have a judgement-free attitude here and like to create a fun and safe environment for everyone,” said Ali Goss, manager of the club, which is located in Caribbean Plaza.

“We want to help support the LGBTQIA+ community get together in more acceptable places, where you can party and socialise freely,” she explained, adding that every month there will be themed parties where prizes will be given out for best dressed, with tonight’s (Tuesday, 2 April) theme “Wig Out”.

Industry veterans One World Entertainment will play dance favourites from the ’70’s onwards while Latin dancers will entertain throughout the night. The event runs from 9pm-2am.

One World co-owner and DJ, Eden Hurlston said he was “thrilled” to be part of the regular DJ rotation for the event. “It’s incredible for the community to finally have an open, safe space to go and have fun without any judgment and One World is really proud to be a part of it,” he said.

Known for its cigars, there is a separate, dedicated smoking lounge at Havana Club but the main room where the event is held is non-smoking.

Tonight’s event is dedicated to the landmark victory of Day and her partner, Bodden, who challenged the marriage law as unconstitutionally preventing them from getting married here in Cayman.

Organizers said they hope members of the community, supporters and anyone just looking for a fun dance party come out to show their support. In encouraging people to attend, One World Entertainment owner Craig Urchyshyn said, “Be on the right side of history and come wig-out with us on Tuesday night.”

Goss added, “I see the direction and movements Cayman is headed in for the LGBTQIA+ community, and with the new ruling legalising same sex marriages, we are one step closer to truly living in paradise.”
