Dash cam evidence: On Cayman’s roads (Part 2)

| 08/05/2019
CNS Local Life

(CNS Local Life): About a year ago someone sent us video evidence, taken by a dash cam, of appalling driving on Grand Cayman’s roads, which we published here. At the time we invited people to send us similar videos, and though it’s been a while, we now have Part 2, sent by a CNS reader Wednesday of an incident that could so easily have become yet another smash.

With terrible driving in the news right now, and crash reports seemingly every day, it seems like a good time to remind drivers that they can be seen and hopefully shamed. In the meantime, we leave an open invitation for people to expose dangerous manoeuvres on our roads.

Please send your video to the police. The license plate number is clearly visible in the video along with a phone number on the back window. It shouldn’t be too hard for them to track down the vehicle.

i sent it to the police i did not even get a response, i has my w kids in the car on the way to school.

CNS: If that is your video, can you email me at info@caymannewsservice.com . You can remain entirely anonymous. I can highlight it but I’d like your permission.

Watching the video over and over, it looks like the van clipped the cyclist at the 43 second mark, making it a hit and run.

CNS, have you called island electronics for a statement. I’m so appalled by this, I won’t spend a dime with them until they name the driver and if he has a work permit, cancel it. That is so unacceptable. I had a young girl turn right in front of me while I was riding my bike and I couldn’t stop in time so I smashed into the side of her car. I’m still pissed about that and it’s been years now. These drivers don’t care about cyclists!

  5. Anonymous says:

Island Electronics should publicly name the driver. His license should be suspended. He was clearly driving without due care and attention.

I imagine they would have had a company wide staff meeting explaining why this is unacceptable. When you drive a company vehicle, you are representing that company. Good and bad! ALL of them should be following exemplary road rules.

I do expect a statement from the GM of Island Electronics Fire Alarm Division regarding how they handled the reprimand and further education of this driver. He should be sent to a driving course and taken off the road until it is complete.
But I also think the driver should explain what he thought was actually happening when he overtook the cyclist and then turned left in front of him???

Get on it Island Electronics!! Because yes, I am happy to mark your company off my list. Reputation is everything in a small community.

Cyclists mean less traffic, better air quality, fewer greenhouse gas emissions and a healthier population. Give them space on the roads. If you ask around, you will find many people who don’t cycle because of bad drivers and instead drive their cars, usually with one person in them, to work and back. Even if you don’t want to cycle, you should encourage cyclists by being a considerate driver.

Island Electronics you’ve just lost my business

Absolutely disgusting driving, Island Electronics Fire Alarm Division, what do you have to say for yourselves?!

I certainly will not be using you in the future

While you cant make out the company due to the sun-flare , not tough to identify a newer Ford or Mercedes box van ladder rack on roof , colour scheme easily made out.
    Clowns…..

What is the name of the company on the red van? I cant make it out, and would like to know so as to avoid giving them my business. Thanks for posting!

Disgusting! No respect for cyclists! When cyclists are the ones benefitting their health, environment and easing traffic!

Give cyclists the room they deserve.

Could not agree more! Does the Government have plans for make the roads more cyclist friendly? They need more than a painted lane on the shoulders of busy roads

      • Anonymous says:

No, too busy fighting gay marriage and pushing a dock on us. Idiots in charge.

here is the eveidence…what will the police do?
    nothing of course.

OMG!!! SO glad he missed that cyclist!!! That was SO dangerous and scary.
I miss riding my bike so very much but after too many near misses, my bike gathers dust.
This video shows the same thing that has happened to me on numerous occasions. Cars riding ahead of a bicycle and turning left right in front of them Like, DO YOU THINK IT IS A STATIONARY BIKE???

  15. Anonymous says:

SUV and the Fire alarm division van drivers must lose their license to drive. Today! Patiently waiting for such news.

  16. Anonymous says:

Unbelievable! So what is going to happen, if anything, to the driver?

    • Anonymous says:

Absolutely nothing. Dont ride a bicycle on the roads here if you value your life. Save up and get a car or take the bus.

      • Anonymous says:

Not all can afford getting fit by going to the gym and pay or be on the sun running because of health restrictions. It saves us from paying insurance, gas and good for our environment. So tell me? How do you value your life living in Cayman?I guess you’re rich lol

      • Anonymous says:

Don’t forget we have many people on minimum wage in the service industry unsocial hours often mean walking or riding a bicycle is the only choice. All road users should be safe on our roads. The answer is to improve our driving not give up other forms of transport.

Ironic that a company offering security, employs drivers like this!
