(CNS Local Life): One Dog at a Time (ODAAT) took its fundraising efforts on the water recently with a boat trip that included visiting the stingrays and snorkelling around a coral reef. The well-attended event, held Sunday, 28 April, one of two such trips organised every year, raised more than $1,500 for the dog-rescue charity.

Lunch was also included, after which the boat headed to Starfish Point, the last stop on the trip. “We always come on the ODAAT boat trip as it’s incredible value for money, a scrummy lunch is always included and I’m supporting my favourite charity,” said Hamish Hamilton, in a press release.

The money raised on the day will help offset vet bills, food and routine medications for the dogs the charity assists. ODAAT has so far rescued more than 40 dogs in the last year, despite changes in export rules that only allow dogs older than six months to be sent to the US to permanent homes. “This alteration has caused substantial difficulties for all the rescue groups,” ODAAT vice president Caroline Johnston explained. “Previously we have been able to send dogs to the United States from around 12-16 weeks old. This freed up our foster homes and enabled us to rescue more abandoned or pound pooches.”

The change has necessitated finding extra temporary homes for dogs awaiting trips to the US. “We are seeking additional fosters to try and allow us to continue rescuing without affecting the quality of care all our dogs and puppies receive in their loving foster homes.

“There is no major outlay for the fosters, apart from giving their time. We provide everything the dog or pup needs, from puppy pads to towels, from crates to food.”

To enable the charity to support the foster homes, ODAAT relies on donations and organises fundraising events throughout the year. Next up is the premiere of the movie, A Dog’s Journey on Friday, 17 May, at 7pm at the Camana Bay cinema. Tickets, which cost $15 each, enable moviegoers to purchase popcorn and a drink for $5 on presentation of their ticket. In addition, the first 50 tickets sold will receive a voucher for Agua restaurant. A 50/50 raffle draw will also be held on the night.
