(CNS Local Life): Inspired by his niece in New Zealand, Devon Clark of Calico Jack’s, along with Marty Francis and TJ Hucker, organised the first annual charity golf tournament to raise awareness and funds for the Cayman Heart Fund (CHF). With more than 72 golfers and various supporters participating, the organisers raised $4,575 at the 1 April event.

The fundraiser doubled as an opportunity to raise awareness about congenital heart defect (CHD), heart disease and stroke, according to a Cayman Heart Fund press release. The golfers were also informed about the importance of helping those families in Cayman that have suffered a cardiac event or have a child born with CHD.

Clark’s niece, Luna, was born in 2016 with HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) and he keeps in constant contact with her. “Luna is an inspiration to me, and I am so proud of this little girl’s courage as she battles this very serious illness; she’s a little warrior,” he said.

This was not the first event related to CHD in which Calico Jack’s staff and friends participated. In February they attended the first annual CHD Awareness Beach Walk, which raised public awareness and funds for families in Cayman with a child born with CHD, to assist them with the expenses associated with urgent paediatric cardiology healthcare.

CHF coordinator Colleen Mellott, thanked the group for the hard work and dedication in organising such a big event. “The money raised will go towards our mission to improve the cardiovascular health of all in the Cayman Islands and certainly those families with children born with CHD,” she said.

Handel Whittaker, owner of Calico Jack’s, said he was proud of his entire team for raising important awareness about CHD, heart disease and strokes.
