(CNS Local Life): Students from First Baptist Christian School (FBCS) and Cayman International School (CIS) showed off their book smarts by winning their respective divisions at the fifth annual “Lera Parchment Battle of the Books”. Organised by the Cayman Islands Information Professionals (CIIP), the contest requires teams of six students each, aged seven to 10 (Division 1) and 11 to 14 (Division 2), to study 10 books and then compete on how much they have retained from their reading.

From FBCS, “The Books and the Sword” team took the Division 1 crown and “The Book Minions” from CIS won Division 2, after earning the most points among their age groups. “To Be Determined” from Cayman Prep (Division 1) and “The Brac Battlers” from Layman E. Scott High School (Division 2) were runners-up.

Almost 140 youngsters took part in the contest, hosted at Sir John A. Cumber Primary School, whose aim is to improve literacy across the Cayman Islands.

Acting Director of the Cayman Islands Public Library Service and CIIP chairman, Paul Robinson, said in a press release that this year’s challenge had been a “success beyond our expectation,” adding, “It is a wonderful credit to our young readers that they dedicate their spare time to reading ten books in advance of the competition and perform so brilliantly on the day.

“We would like to thank all the students, their teachers and the volunteers that make the event happen, to keep the love of reading very much alive.”

The event is named after Lera Parchment, who was an avid reader and a long-term supporter of libraries.
