Can I relicense car without any plates?

| 19/06/2019

I know there is amnesty for expired vehicle licences. What happens if someone doesn’t have plate number to hand in but can hand in the vehicle logbook? Vehicle logbook will have VIN numbers which they can crosscheck in the system. Will they ask no questions as part of amnesty rules?

Auntie’s answer: Under the amnesty, which the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing (DVDL) introduced the end of April and will run till 1 November, you have three options for your particular circumstances. To briefly explain the amnesty, though, during the six months it is in place, drivers will not be liable for back licensing fees no matter the reason for the failure to pay.

In your case, a DVDL official outlined the choices you have. “If the vehicle owner doesn’t have the plates (or has just one) they can still proceed with the process of terminating the vehicle under the amnesty, or renewing the licence of the vehicle,” he explained. If you decide to renew the licence, you will then have to purchase new plates, which cost $75. In addition, you will be required to show proof of car insurance.

The third option is to suspend the vehicle if you intend to get it back on the road at some point. When you are ready to relicense the vehicle, you would be required to pay for new plates and purchase insurance.

So wonderful that the the CIG are arbitrarily waiving 15 years of back fees. Where do I submit my household refund invoice for 15 years x 2 cars x KYD$180/yr? That’s KYD$5,400 we didn’t need to pay, it would seem…
