What can be done about Humane Society flood problem?

| 28/06/2019

Every time it rains the Humane Society gets flooded. Why doesn’t Dart do something humane and provide them with a safe and dry environment?

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian status

Auntie’s answer: Yes, the Humane Society is unfortunately very prone to flooding, and not surprisingly the shelter was hit very hard with the downpour this week. In fact, a staff member there told me that the latest rain filled the premises with about a foot of water. Luckily, according to the society’s Facebook page, a supporter arranged for water pumps to deal with the flood and as of Thursday, the shelter was once again dry inside.

Clearly, though, this situation is untenable, not helped by Cayman being right in the middle of the rainy season.

The society depends on donations and its dedicated staff and volunteers to operate, and throughout the year there are various fundraisers held to bring in the money. I agree that they need to be housed at a location that will not take in water every time it rains too hard. And I understand why you are calling on our island’s biggest developer to help.

However, to be perfectly blunt, that is not their job. Don’t get me wrong; I would love to hear that they – or any other company in Cayman – stepped in to save the day for the Humane Society. But there is no guarantee that will happen.

The organisation, though, is pointing the way forward, with a plea on its website for help. Referring to their current building as their “biggest challenge”, they are working toward a goal of “premises fit for purpose”. The society has been calling on people with “skills in large-scale fundraising, building contracting or project management” to contact them.

I am happy to publicise their appeal. It seems appropriate that the shelter, which offers a community-wide service, is asking for assistance from throughout the community. I am sure they would welcome any and all donations, either of money, materials or expertise. Let’s get those dogs and cats a safe, dry home.

In Dart we trust! And I’m not being sarcastic or nasty. I am one of those…yes, many of us exist…who appreciate what he has done for Cayman, especially in the lean years after 2008, and for the excellent employment opportunities he gives many many Caymanians and his overall community spirit. No doubt I’ll now get attacked for daring to support him but tough…..

    1) Why is it Dart’s problem? That’s such petty & entitled thinking.
    2) Oh, unless you were trying to tip the news in advance of the press release. We now see which faction within the Society won the ‘where do we move to’ sweepstakes.

Why is it that we cannot have one organization that assists with animal welfare? Why do we need 4 or 5? Would they all not be able to make more impact by coming together, amalgamating fundraising, facilities, administration, etc.? Is it just egos?
As a supporter of animal welfare it does not make we very supportive.

Same reason we need hundreds of different churches to worship the same God. Petty jealousy and power.

Uh… not sure if you missed it, but Dart actually did agree to help out.
