Governor Martyn Roper leads the parade in three cheers to Queen Elizabeth II

(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands celebrated the 93rd birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday, 8 June, complete with a parade, a 21-gun salute and the presenting of the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour. Governor Martyn Roper took part in his first Queen’s birthday celebration, presenting awards and inspecting the guard of honour.

As part of the programme, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson announced the conferring of the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour on Restmin “Nellie” Elaine McCoy, stated a press release. The former civil servant, retired after 51 years’ working for government, was recognised for her outstanding contributions as a laboratory technician at the Mosquito Research and Control Unit. The governor presented the award to McCoy.

Roper also presented the Duke of Edinburgh gold awards to Shanice Kelly, Chauntae Martinez and Syrena Powell, all from the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps. Katherine Jackson, head of the award programme, announced the recipients.

During the celebration, there was a royal salute to the Queen and the governor as the parade marched past.

The governor also inspected a guard of honour formed by the parade contingents from Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS), Cayman Islands Fire Service, Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service, Cayman Islands Scouts Association, Girls Brigade and Cayman Islands Cadet Corps, all of whom were headed by the RCIPS Band.

For the first time, the parade was led by two RCIPS officers riding All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Also in attendance were members of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association.

Dr Steve Brady led the gathering in prayer and Arek Nicholson performed the National Song. The annual Queen’s birthday celebration is organised by the Cayman Islands Protocol Office.
