(CNS Local Life): Cayman’s squash team continued its golden run at the 2019 NatWest International Island Games in Gibraltar on Wednesday, taking the top spots in men’s and women’s doubles as well as mixed doubles, following on from the individual golds they earned the day before. Overall, on the fifth day of competition, Cayman took in five golds, one silver and one bronze, for a total haul of 14 medals to date.

Winning gold were Jake Kelly and Julian Jervis, beating Gibraltar 15-13, 15-11; Jade Pitcairn and Eilidh Bridgeman, topping Jersey Guernsey 15-3, 15-7; and Cameron Stafford and Marlene West winning their match against Guernsey 15-5, 15-7, for the second squash gold for both.

In the team event, Cayman (Stafford, Jervis, Kelly, West and Pitcairn) all won their first singles matches against Isle of Man in straight sets. Pool matches continue Thursday, with Cayman taking on Orkney, the remaining team in their group.

In the pool, Jordan Crooks took gold in the 100m freestyle in a time of 49.94, beating Isle of Man which took second (50.25) and third (50.63). The women’s 4x100m freestyle team (Jillian Crooks, Alison Jackson, Avery Lambert, Kyra Rabess) also struck gold, after qualifying the fastest for the finals. Their time of 3:52.14 was .30 seconds ahead of Guernsey in the silver medal position.

Cayman took medals in athletics as well, with Carl Morgan and Louis Gordon getting silver and bronze, respectively, in the long jump. Several athletes also remain in medals contention in track. Jeavhon Jackson was the fastest qualifier in the 100m heats, clocking 11.16, and set for the semifinals on Thursday.

Cayman also has two medal prospects in the men’s 400m. Sherlock Brooks tied for fastest out of the heats in 49.04, and Karim Murray made it to Thursday’s finals as the seventh fastest qualifier in 50.57.

On the women’s side, Danika Lyn, who has already won silver in the 100m, qualified fastest for the semifinals in the 200m in a time of 25.6. Danielle Bailey has also qualified for the semifinals as the sixth fastest sprinter in 26.96.

In men’s basketball, Cayman continued its impressive run with a 114-42 defeat of Gotland, and will take on fourth seed Guernsey in a semifinal match Thursday.

In addition, one of Cayman’s beach volleyball teams is still in with a chance at a medal. Jessica Wolfenden and Stefania Gandolfi beat Aland 28-26, 21-9 setting up a semifinal match against Menorca on Thursday. But Marissa Harrison and Ilean Powery lost 21-16, 21-17 to Gotland and Richard Campbell and Nathan Dack lost to Aland 21-16, 21-9 in their quarterfinal contests.

In an incredibly tight race in the women’s 50m freestyle, Alison Jackson came in fourth, in a time of 26.44, missing bronze by mere .03 seconds, with only .30 seconds separating the top three finishers.

After seven races in the laser radial rig, Robert Jackson is still in sixth place and Will Jackson has moved back up to tenth place.
