(CNS Local Life): The Cayman National Swim Team has returned from the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championship (CCCAN) in Barbados with one gold and four bronze medals. The games, held from 28 June to 2 July, featured 550 swimmers representing 27 countries across all disciplines over 151 events.

Eight Cayman swimmers made it through to the finals, resulting in the five medals. Earning spots on the podium for Cayman were Harper Barrowman, with gold in the girls 11-12 200LC m freestyle (2:14.60), bronze in the 11-12 100LC m butterfly (1:09.63) and bronze in the 11-12 400 LC m freestyle (4:44.80); Alex Dakers, bronze in the boys 18 & over 1500LC m freestyle (16:49.16); and Kaitlyn Sullivan, bronze in the girls 11-12 200LC m breaststroke (2:55.86).

CCCAN, an age group swimming championship, is a more competitive meet than CARIFTA, as it includes athletes from Central America and swimmers over 18 years old, stated a press release from the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association (CIASA).

The 11-member Cayman Islands swim team, aged from 12 to 18, also included Will Sellars, Corey Frederick-Westerborg, Stephanie Royston, Stefano Bonati, Sarah Jackson, Lauren Hew, Zachary Moore and Jake Bailey.

The Cayman Islands placed 17th overall, with 65 points from the pool events and 11 points from open water, in which Dakers, Bonati and Bailey competed in the 5K race and all finished in the points.

Steve Broadbelt, CIASA director for media, said of the team’s performance: “Cayman had impressive results at CCCAN with nine of the eleven swimmers competing at this event for the first time. Timing for this event was challenging as half of the representative team headed to Gibraltar for the Island Games and were not able to attend both meets.”

CIASA president Michael Lockwood added, “CIASA would like to congratulate all swimmers who represented the Cayman Islands at the CCCAN Championships and we commend their dedication, commitment and passion for the sport of swimming.”
