(CNS Local Life): University student Jacie Mascarenhas (20) has been named the first recipient of the US$25,000 BritCay Insurance Scholarship, helping her continue her studies at Texas Christian University (TCU) College of Science and Engineering and bringing her closer to her goal of becoming an actuary.

The opportunities that the scholarship opens up “will help me learn more about the insurance field, as well as get hands-on experience”, she said in a press release.

Mascarenhas, who has made the dean’s list three times at university, added, “To be the recipient of such an award is an honour to my family who have made countless sacrifices to get me to where I am today. I’m so grateful that I’m able to repay them for all their efforts. I know I have made them all proud, and I know my mom is smiling down on me from above,” she said.

The student comes highly recommended by her college professors, the release stated, and has accumulated several awards throughout her secondary and tertiary career including the Outstanding Lieutenant Governor Award and Most Improved Division Award at the 2017 Key Club Conference. She graduated from Triple C School as valedictorian with a 4.24 GPA.

“We had some outstanding students who applied this year and it was a very difficult decision to make,” said BritCay Insurance human resources manager Audrey Prendergast. “We are delighted for Jacie and we are sure she will go a long way in her career.”

The BritCay scholarship is worth US$25,000 annually for up to two years for Caymanians or permanent residents with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are undergraduate students entering their second or third year at an accredited university. The scholarship specifically targets students pursuing undergraduate studies in actuarial science, business or commerce, economics, insurance, mathematics or risk management.
