(CNS Local Life): Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) has taken on 18 high school and college students as part of its annual vocational and internship programme, offering them the opportunity to work in a professional environment while exploring a variety of career options at CUC. Some of the students have been assigned to the corporate setting in areas such as human resources and corporate communications while others are working in hard hats and boots on the engineering side in the company’s power plant.

This year the programme, which extends through July and August, has nine university students and nine vocational (high school) students.

Enyer Rivers, who is studying at the University of South Wales and working in HR at CUC, said he would definitely recommend the summer internship to his friends. He added he is confident that if he returns home next summer, CUC will be his top choice for another internship, stated a press release.

Recent high school graduate Jayden Downey said of his experience: “Ever since I’ve been here at CUC, I know for sure that I’m leaning towards a career in electrical engineering.”

Pierce Serrant, high school graduate and prior CUC intern from the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre said, “I’m having a lot of fun working in information technology here at CUC. I’ve made a lot of connections here and the people are lovely.” Serrant is learning the importance of networking by mingling with staff from his prior experience to making new connections as a summer intern, the release said.

In addition to work experience, each year CUC stresses the importance of giving back and invites students to take part in community service exercises, especially an annual event with the Sunrise Adult Training Centre.

“Lunch and Learn” sessions are also held weekly to allow the students to build basic professional and interpersonal skills as well as to promote teamwork and cohesiveness amongst coworkers.

In the release, CUC said it “takes pride in ensuring countless opportunities for young people to dive head first into the world of work as a means of gaining valuable experience, which will benefit them in the future”.
