Eight more medals for Cayman at Island Games

(CNS Local Life): Cayman’s athletes took four silver and four bronze medals in various events Thursday, bringing their total hardware to 22, including eight golds. After finishing the fastest out of the heats, Jeavhon Jackson took silver in the 100m in 10.94, just .12 seconds off the gold medal pace of Guernsey. Sherlock Brooks also came away with hardware in track, earning silver in the 400m in 49.31 seconds.

Swimmer Raya Embury-Brown has added another medal to her collection, earning a second silver at the games, this time in the 800m freestyle event, after coming in second in the 1,500m freestyle on Tuesday.

Jordan Crooks, who already struck gold in the 100m freestyle, added two bronze Thursday – in the 100m backstroke and the 50m freestyle – bringing his total medal haul to four after taking bronze in the 50m backstroke earlier in the week. Cayman’s final medal of the day was in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay where Jordan Crooks, Alison Jackson, Cole Morgan and Kyra Rabess, who were the fastest qualifiers, earned silver, just .67 seconds off the gold won by Isle of Man.

The women’s beach volleyball team of Jessica Wolfenden and Stefania Gandolfi earned Cayman’s sole medal in that event, taking the bronze against Saaremaa 25-23, 21-16.

Ales Cevela will also be bringing a medal home, with a bronze in the IPSC Open Division shooting event Thursday, and he will be competing in the IPSC Standard Division Friday.

Cayman swarms the basket in semifinal win against Guernsey

The men’s basketball is heading to the gold-medal match Friday after another strong win, taking down Guernsey in the semifinals, 103-66.

Cayman’s squash contingent remains in position for a clean sweep of all the golds in that sport, after earning a spot in Friday’s semifinals by taking all its singles matches again without dropping a game in beating Orkney 5-0, to win the group.

Also on Friday, Tiffany Cole and Derek Larner will be competing in the women’s and men’s half marathon.

The Island Games finish tomorrow, with the closing ceremony 8pm Gibraltar time (1pm in Cayman).
