(CNS Local Life): Following the announcement last month of the first four-year scholarship to Northern Caribbean University (NCU) being awarded to Sonia Bailey, the Cayman chapter of the school’s alumni association has begun accepting applications for next year’s grant to attend the Jamaica-based school. Bailey will start her studies this September at NCU, with tuition, books, and room and board covered by the scholarship, which was fully funded by a local donor. She will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education to prepare for a teaching career.

This year’s recipient was named following the 30 June fundraising concert by US motivational speaker and three-time Grammy-nominated singer Jekalyn Carr which was organised by the alumni association as part of a five-day youth outreach initiative. The proceeds from ticket sales along with concert sponsors funded the 2020 scholarship.

In a press release Patricia Ebanks, president of the Cayman alumni chapter, thanked donors for their generosity, adding, “We were moved by the enormous demonstration of goodwill by the community.”

As part of the outreach programme, the Judicial Administration sponsored a youth convocation at the Grand Court 28 June. In addition, to the youth convocation and the concert, Carr’s Cayman tour, themed “Unleash your Potential; Hold Fast to your Values,” included visits to Northward and Fairbanks prisons, Cayman Academy and churches.

NCU president Dr Lincoln Edwards was on hand at the concert to welcome Bailey to the school, as Ebanks presented the award and noted Bailey’s tenacity in qualifying to attend NCU via night classes at the Adventist Church’s CXC programme while holding down a full-time job.

Bailey thanked the alumni association for the opportunity to attend NCU, saying that it had put on her track to realise her dream of becoming a teacher and equipping her to help other young people, the release stated.

The chapter’s second four-year scholarship will enable the recipient to pursue any of the university’s bachelor’s degree programmes starting in 2020.
