(CNS Local Life): Deputy Governor Franz Manderson last week unveiled the logo for this year’s DG’s 5K Challenge, once again celebrating the charitable organisations slated to benefit from the funds the event will raise, which in 2019 will be the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, Special Needs Foundation Cayman and Alex Panton Foundation.

“I am thrilled to be able to work closely with the various charities,” Manderson said in the 1 August release announcing the new logo. “Every year we aim to assist foundations that are tirelessly at work to provide services that reach areas of need in our community.

“I would like to thank our sponsors who partner with us in this initiative which improves quality of life, drives awareness and facilitates change. Of course, I would be remiss not to also thank members of the public who register and join the fun in support of a good cause – we could not make this a success without each of you and I welcome the community to register early.”

The fundraising target for the sixth annual challenge, set for 15 September on Cayman Brac and two weeks later in Grand Cayman, is $70,000, with sponsors already stepping up to meet that goal.

Platinum sponsor Appleby, marking the third straight year it has come aboard at that level is donating $15,000. The law firm which overall has been a sponsor of the event four times is also, for the first time ever, donating an additional $2,500 to fund a special edition cap for the first 400 participants who sign up for the 2019 Challenge.

The DG’s 5K Challenge has had a long association with Appleby, dating back to the early years of the event, a separate press release said. The law firm first supported the event as participants, becoming a gold sponsor in 2016 and then taking up the mantle as the first-ever sole platinum sponsor the following year.

The event has contributed to a diverse range of causes that “have made a real impact on the local community across the Cayman Islands”, with the help of donations by sponsors, the release said.

To this point, Bryan Hunter, managing partner of the Appleby Cayman office, said, “This event has supported so many worthy causes over the years and has grown from strength to strength each year that we have been involved.

“We expect that trend to continue and are pleased that another set of commendable charities will be benefitting this year. We are very proud to be the platinum sponsors of the DG’s 5K Challenge yet again and look forward to contributing to another successful year.”

In thanking Appleby for its continued support, Manderson said, “The DG’s 5K event is very close to my heart because it promotes exercise and provides much-needed funding to amazing charities in the Cayman Islands.

“As the event grows, we have started to increase the number of charities we are able to support, but we can only continue to do this thanks to the community-mindedness and generosity of our sponsors. Appleby has been committed to the Challenge from its early days and I am very grateful they have continued to commit at the platinum level for 2019.”
