Premier Alden McLaughlin signs book of condolence for former Governor Athel Long

(CNS Local Life): The official funeral to commemorate the life of Athel Charles Ethelwulf Long, Cayman’s first governor, is being held Wednesday, 14 August, at the Cayman Islands Baptist Church on Pedro Castle Road, Savannah, with interment to follow at Eden Cemetery (across from Pedro St James). As a former governor, Long, who passed away 1 August 2019, is entitled to receive an official funeral, which is open to the public.

The ceremony will feature a guard of honour, flags at half-staff and a 21-gun salute by the graveside for Long, who served as governor from 1968-1971.

All flags were flown at half-staff Monday and Tuesday, to mark the official period of mourning.

The Protocol Office is working closely with Long’s family and the special Ceremonials Committee to coordinate the event.

Members of the public are also invited to pay their respects by signing an official book of condolence which is now available at the main entrance of the Government Administration Building until close of business Wednesday, 14 August.

Only current and former post-holders of the most senior public service positions are entitled to receive official funerals, which are held for the governor, deputy governor, premier and former leaders of government business, chief justice and speaker.

The hearse carrying Long will precede a processional police march and attendees from the church to Eden Cemetery.

“Mr Long was well known and deeply respected throughout this community for his humility, authenticity and commitment to service,” said Cabinet Secretary Samuel Rose, in a press release. “He accomplished much during his tenure as the first governor and last administrator of our islands. The Cayman Islands was truly his home therefore it is fitting that the country should mark his passing in this way and I invite members of the public to join us on Wednesday afternoon as we honour a life well lived.”

The official funeral will be rebroadcast on CIGTV20 at a date to be announced.
