(CNS Local Life): Diana DeMercado has been selected to receive a three-year scholarship to complete a bachelor of laws at Truman Bodden Law School. The award, from Harneys, also includes paid professional experience as an intern at the law firm during school breaks. This summer, she took part in her first internship, working with the dispute and resolution practice group.

Over the summer, a group of 18 students including DeMercado interned in the firm’s legal, fiduciary and business support teams, where they observed day-to-day operations and earned practical experience.

DeMercado, who is from Cayman Brac, said in a press release, “I am honoured to be selected as the legal scholarship recipient. I know how competitive the market is and coming from such a small island as the Brac, I am extremely grateful that they saw something in me and look forward to a bright future with the firm.”

Once DeMercado earns her postgraduate qualification she will be eligible to undertake articles of clerkship with the firm which, once complete, will allow her to qualify as an attorney in Cayman.

The internships Harneys offers are open to students who currently enrolled in either secondary education or in a university or postgraduate-level law course.

Harneys said in a press release it “is committed to finding and supporting exceptional individuals who wish to gain first-hand work experience in a leading global firm”.

Kathy Quintana-Gonzalez, one of this summer’s interns, said of the experience, It has been a privilege to be welcomed into the team at Harneys. My time working with the fiduciary team has allowed me to gain a solid understanding of corporate work and the fiduciary business.”

Trisha McElroy, Harneys’ head of people management and culture, added, “We are pleased to welcome these students into Harneys and provide them with a framework that can be used to help them excel in their chosen fields. We hope that the experience gained through these internships will help nurture their understanding of the global legal industry and build a long-lasting relationship with their mentors.”
