(CNS Local Life): Swimmer Lauren Hew failed to qualify for the 200m freestyle finals Wednesday, at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, finishing her heat in 2:14.50, which placed her 21st out of the 25 athletes taking part. Acknowledging she was unhappy with her time in the race, Hew is staying positive for her next two events.

“I haven’t been close to my best time in that event in a year and I have been training in a sprint group so it’s expected that I wouldn’t be as fast in the longer distances,” she said after the race, adding this summer she started training in a mid-distance group “and I’m feeling a lot better about my training”.

Hew noted that it will take some time for that new training to take effect, and she is staying positive. “You know there’s always a bright side to things. I looked pretty strong in the beginning of the (200m) race so that’s a good sign going into the 100,” she said.

The swimmer is looking ahead to her remaining two events, with the 100m freestyle heat set for Thursday. “[J]ust because I had one bad race doesn’t mean that the others aren’t going to be great. So, I’m just focusing on staying positive and having a good mindset going into the 50 and 100 free and seeing what I can do there.”

Meanwhile, after yet another delayed start, the 22 sailors in the laser standard event were able to complete three more races. Cayman’s sole sailor Jesse Jackson continues to struggle, finishing at or near the back of the group in all three races. The last two of the 10 races are set for Thursday, 8 August, with the sailors who qualify for the finals competing the following day.

Swimmer Brett Fraser will be taking part in his first event of the Games Thursday morning, in a heat for the 100m freestyle.

Proud of you Lauren. Keep it up. Being the 21’st fastest swimmer in the Pan Am games which contains the USA, Canada, Brazil etc. is a great achievement. Looking forward to seeing you in the next two races.
