(CNS Local Life): The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) opened its doors to new students for the fall semester on Friday, 23 August, kicking off a week of orientation and registration activities. Minister of Education Juliana O’Connor-Connolly attended Friday’s session and presented ten winning students $250 vouchers to use towards their tuition.

Under a revamped orientation system, students can register for classes, receive advising support and get ready for the start of the new semester all in one location.

In a press release, Dr Stacy McAfee, president and CEO of UCCI, said of the changes: “UCCI is reinventing how we advise, register, orient and engage students to ensure that they thrive and enjoy a rich university experience in class and through various co-curricular activities.”

The purpose of the new student orientation is to prepare students to successfully transition to college, the press release stated. New or returning students are able to get information about the goals, mission, policies, admission requirements and programmes of study available at UCCI. Students are also able to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings by attending sessions with alumni, and go on campus tours led by student representative council members.

A small open campus event was also held to allow students the opportunity to interact with professors in their chosen departments. In addition, students and alumni can attend the last of a two-day career fair hosted by The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman on campus 28 August, where they can learn about opportunities to further their careers while continuing their education.

Registration for the fall term of UCCI is open until 30 August at the Sir Vassel Johnson Hall.
