(CNS Local Life): Five outstanding students at the University College of the Cayman Islands have each been awarded a Abbott Aerospace SEZC Ltd Scholarship, funded by Richard Abbott, a volunteer teacher at the university. The scholarships, worth up to CI$2500, are applied to the students’ college tuition fees. This year’s recipients are Shaniel Brown, Aliyah Knox, Andre Mena-Hebbert, Tavia Turner, Shaneil Brown and Andre Jackson, who were selected on the basis of academic achievement, extra-curricular participation and community service.

The scholarship was launched in the Spring of 2018, when Abbott began teaching an engineering management course on the UCCI campus. However, he was not able to accept any payments from UCCI for his part-time teaching, so the scholarship to fund students at UCCI was agreed in lieu of his pay.

Abbott said, “It is a great pleasure to meet and to have the opportunity to help these UCCI students. It is a great way for Abbott Aerospace and any company here in the Cayman Islands to assist Cayman youth and the local community. We wish them well in their academic endeavors and not to forget that once they enter professional life, success is best celebrated by helping others achieve their own success.”

UCCI President Dr Stacy McAfee noted the university’s gratitude to Abbott for his continued support. She said, “Our students are hardworking and talented individuals who enrich our campus. They are demonstrated leaders who commit to academic excellence and service to their communities through co-curricular activities.”

To be considered for the Abbott Aerospace Scholarship students must demonstrate a positive engagement in community service, exhibit strong leadership qualities, be active in extracurricular activities, and show strength in academics. Most notably, those identified as Abbott Scholars must show a true passion to use their individual gifts and talents to make a tangible and positive impact on the world around them.
