(CNS): Extreme heat cut the 2019 CUC Girls Primary Football League (GPFL) Opening Rally short last Saturday, 14 September, as a number of players were affected by the intense conditions. Although the plan was for the eight teams to all play each other (a total of seven games each), a decision was made to end the day’s play after some schools had completed five games and others six games.

Cayman Prep enjoyed an unbeaten day winning five and drawing one of their six games, scoring 12 goals and conceding just one. Bodden Town Primary, Cayman International School, Savannah Primary and St Ignatius Catholic School tasted defeat only once and a number of games ended in stalemates. The other schools teams participating were Prospect Primary, George Town Primary and Sir John A. Cumber Primary.

Tournament officials said that even under the very uncomfortable conditions, the players’ resilience and determination was exemplary. However, schools with smaller squads found the conditions very difficult because their players were taking part in competitive football for the very first time. “But play they did and throughout the heat, pain and tiredness, they played on.”

The 2019 CUC Boy’s Primary Football League (PFL) Opening Rally takes place this Saturday, 21 September, beginning at 9:00am at the Annex Field. Defending champions Cayman Prep will be aiming to add yet another prize to their rapidly expanding trophy cabinet as they search for a second successive Opening Rally title.

The 2019 CUC PFL and GPFL regular seasons start on Saturday, 28 September, at venues across Grand Cayman.

Officials said the main aims for the opening rallies are player development, participation and preparation for the regular season. The schools bring larger squads and are able to play all their players throughout the day.

Organisers gave special thanks to the league’s youth officials, Jonathan Holness, Kandre Amerally, Alex Dailey, Matthew Bodden, Shay and Rio Windsor, and ‘rookies’ Dante Dell’Oglio and Jamar Linton, who did an excellent job officiating all the games throughout the day under the guidance of Chastine Rankine and Shirley Amerally.
