Cyclists pedal for pets in charity event
(CNS): Almost 70 cyclists of all ages participated in the first annual PAWS On Wheels fundraiser held Sunday, 5 July. The ride started at The Lighthouse Restaurant in Breakers and, while some riders opted to cycle a 10-mile course, most participants completed the full 21 miles around East End to finish their ride back at the restaurant.
Founded in 2010 by Giuseppe and Susanna Gatta, Alex Stewart and Marleine Gagnon, PAWS (Protection of Animal Welfare Society) is a local non-profit that works to alleviate the suffering of animals in need, particularly in the eastern districts.
The Cayman Islands Cycling Association and Chris Weaver supported the event by ensuring the safety of the riders at intersections, and placing traffic cones and signs along the route. In addition, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service provided an escort for the convoy of riders as they made their way around the East End loop.
Following the ride, all participants were treated to a continental breakfast buffet and raffle prize draw at The Lighthouse. Local restaurants and businesses donated more than 20 gift certificates – and one bicycle – for the random prize draw for the riders. Prizes were also awarded to Josh Weaver and Sofia Pacini, who tied for best costume.
The funds raised will support PAWS’ various community efforts, which include financial assistance to families whose animals need veterinary care or pet supplies; a spay and neuter programme; kennels built by inmates at Northward to animals in need of shelter; community dog washes; and boarding for injured, abused, and/or neglected animals while they await adoption.
“Many dogs and cats will be looked after with the funds raised on Sunday,” Giuseppe Gatta said. He also expressed his gratitude, on behalf of PAWS, to the main sponsors for the event: Walkers, BCQS International, Progressive Distributors Ltd., Island Supply, Ristorante Papagallo, Topimex Distributors, and The Lighthouse Restaurant.
