Brac students show off math talent
(CNS Local Life): Continuing an initiative which began in 2010 by Layman E. Scott Sr High School on Cayman Brac to improve students’ math skills, the school recently held its ninth annual inter-house mathematics quiz, rewarding six young people with iPads for their efforts. A 2010 inspection report highlighting students’ poor performance in math compared to other core subjects prompted the turnaround.
In the quiz, three students representing each “house” took part in separate inter-house competitions, with winners determined in both the junior (years 7-9) and senior (years 10-12) categories. EY Cayman donated the prizes.
“We are extremely grateful for EY’s support,” said Adrian Jones, principal of the school, in a press release. “Their support of the mathematics quiz competition is in reality, a support of the improvement of mathematics throughout the school and a consequential investment in the youth of this community.”
Suzanne Collins of EY, who presented the prizes at the event, said, “EY is pleased to support the school’s initiative to improve numeracy. It was great to see the students and faculty so excited by mathematics.”
