CCMI to recognise champions of the ocean
(CNS Local Life): The Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) has launched its Ocean Awards, with nominations open in a range of categories aiming to recognise both individuals and companies committed to improving the health of the marine environment. The awards, part of the nonprofit organisation’s 20th anniversary celebrations this year, are being introduced as the focal point of the annual Festival of Seas fundraising gala in November.
Dr Carrie Manfrino, president and research director of CCMI, said in a press release that she is excited to have this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of community members. “We want to focus on those individuals and companies that are making a difference to our coral reefs and oceans. Our aim is to find solutions to declining coral reefs through research, conservation and education, but we do not work alone.”
The following eight Ocean Awards will be presented to deserving members of the community:
- Local Hero Award
- Scientist of the Year
- Innovator of the Year
- Tourism Advocate of the Year
- Rising Star
- Ocean Conservation Company of the Year
- Community Ocean Lover
- Lifetime Achievement Award in Coral Reef Conservation
Nominations will be accepted from 19 April-8 July 2018. Anyone is welcome to submit nominations for all categories except the lifetime achievement award. A panel of judges will assess the nominations over the summer. Finalists in each awards category will be announced mid-September; the winners for each award will be revealed at the 3 November Festival of Seas gala.
“We want to take this opportunity to recognise inspired leaders, bold innovators, creative thinkers and those who give generously and tirelessly of their time and talents,” said Manfrino. “This network of committed individuals and organisations push us to think bigger, reach further and strive for greater solutions in an effort to realise our vision of ‘a world with vibrant oceans and healthy coral reefs.”
