Cayman heads to Toastmasters world championships
(CNS Local Life): A representative from Cayman for the first time won the Caribbean Toastmasters District Speech competition in Haiti, held on Saturday, 19 May. Annick Jackman went up against eight contestants from Puerto Rico, Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana, Curacao, Haiti and Jamaica. She will move to the next round of competition in Chicago in August, where she will represent the entire Caribbean to vie for a spot in the finals of the World Championship of Public Speaking.
Her winning speech, “They Walk Among Us”, highlighted the fact that there are persons we interact with daily who may be hiding emotional or physiological pain and the importance of learning to be kind in our interactions with others, stated a press release. Calling the win an “honour and privilege”, Jackman said she is grateful for all the support given.
The Cayman Islands celebrated other awards for 2016-2017 during the District Conference in Haiti, including Division Leader of the Year to Distinguished Toastmaster Ingrid B. Miller for her leadership of the clubs in Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Turks & Caicos Islands, and also President Distinguished Area under Area Director Jusene Brown. Three clubs were recognised for their membership accomplishments with Grand Cayman Toastmasters and Eminent Orators earning President Distinguished Clubs which is the highest award granted to clubs.
Paul Persaud, the current Area Director for the Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands Toastmaster Clubs said, “I am delighted with the high level of performance and success accomplished by all clubs over the past two years.” He congratulated Jackman on her achievement, adding, ”I am confident Ms Jackman will continue to make tremendous strides, as she brings home another first place win when she competes in the world championship round later this year.”
