Cayman’s swimmers competing at regional event
(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands National Swim Team is competing at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championship (CCCAN) being held in Aruba, having travelled there Wednesday, 27 June. The championship takes place every other year and it has been more than five years since Cayman has sent a team.
The competitive swimming event takes place from today (29 June) to 3 July at the Piscina Olimpico Roly Bisslik in the city of Savaneta, Aruba.
CCCAN is an age-group swimming championship with 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and 18-and-over categories. The Cayman swimmers, ranging in age from 12 to 15, competing at the event are Jake Alberga, Corey Frederick-Westerborg, Jillian Crooks, Allyson Belfonte, Sophie Ackerley, Avery Lambert, Sabine Ellison, Stefano Bonati and Jordan Crooks.
Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association technical director and coach Bailey Weathers said of the competition: “CCCAN is a step up from CARIFTA, the qualifying times are faster. In addition to all the teams that were at CARIFTA, we’ll be swimming against other teams in the region from Cuba, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico and Dominican Republic.”
As to facing tough competition, Bailey added, “We have an excellent team and our goal is to qualify for some finals.”
Cayman’s team is limited to competitive pool swimming and does not have any entries in open water or synchronised swimming for this event.
