Philippines wins Miss Universe
(CNS Local Life): Catriona Gray (24), representing the Philippines, claimed the Miss Universe crown for 2018 in Thailand Sunday night beating contestants from 93 other countries including Cayman’s own Caitlyn Tyson. Gray, the fourth woman to take home the crown from the Philippines, pipped South African Demi Leigh Nel-Peters, who was first runner up, and Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutiérrez, who came in third. Host Thailand’s own Sophida Kanchanarin made it to the final ten but Miss Cayman Islands missed out on a spot in the top 20.
Despite not earning a top finish, Tyson posted on her Facebook page that the beauty contest had “been a life changing and eye opening experience that I will never forget…”
Miss Jamaica Emily Maddison made it to the semifinals but missed the cut for the top ten after some stumbling over her comments. Meanwhile, Miss Spain Angela Ponce made history as the first transgender woman in the competition though she did not make it into the top 20.
