Ezzard Miller hosts Easter outing for seniors
(CNS Local Life): MLA Ezzard Miller, with the help of North Side businesses and the Department of Tourism, hosted a beach outing at Rum Point for seniors Tuesday, 23 April, after the Easter crowds returned to work. “We have a regular weekly seniors’ fellowship in North Side at the United Church, but we wanted to do something special for seniors for Easter without their having to compete with the holiday crowds,” Miller said in a press release.
He added that the weekly meetings are about fellowship, worship, and socialising, and that all the district’s churches participate in programme arrangements, which can include devotions, painting and craft activities, special informational sessions, and often a game of bingo, the press release said.
Organising the outing for the seniors was truly a community effort, Miller explained, with John Buckley, manager of Rum Point Club, hosting the seniors for lunch; Jesus Vasquez, front office supervisor, and Rupert Scotchman, housekeeping manager, of Morritt’s Tortuga Club, providing beach towels; and the Department of Tourism providing sunscreen and sunglasses.
Miller also singled out Kendal Connor, emergency medical technician with the Health Services Authority, who gave up his day off to be available in case of any emergencies. North Side Community Development Officer Flavia Gardner also attended.
For transporting the seniors to and from Rum Point, Miller rented a van from Economy Car Rental, which offered a “substantial discount”.
“We all wanted to send the message to our seniors that they are of value to the society and that we place a high priority on looking after them and ensuring that they do have opportunities to get out into the community, particularly to enjoy some recreation,” Miller said.
After lunch Miller’s North Side personal assistant, Carol Saunds, led a bingo session and handed out prizes to winners.
